Rebuilt titles: What you need to know

A
rebuilt title
certifies that a car that was once deemed a total loss now meets all of the legal and safety requirements to be considered drivable. The totaled car will first be issued a salvage title before it can be
rebuilt and issued a new title
.
It is illegal to drive a salvage title vehicle before it’s been properly repaired: Once you take care of the necessary
car repairs
, the salvage title can be replaced with a rebuilt title, so long as it passes the required examination.
You can sell or
buy a salvage title car
, but it can be considerably difficult considering the cost of repairs. It’s often much easier to find a buyer for a used car with a rebuilt title car.
Keep in mind: A rebuilt title does not expunge a vehicle’s history, but it is the only legal way to drive a car that was previously totaled. The actual cash value of a rebuilt title car will be lower compared to the resale value of a car with a
clean title
.
