background
National General
gives policyholders several options to cancel their
car insurance
policy: by fax, mail, in person, or by calling 1-888-293-5108.

Four ways to cancel National General coverage

To cancel your National General auto insurance policy you will need:
  • Your name as it appears on your National General policy
  • Your insurance policy number, which you can find on your policy ID card and policy documents
  • The effective date for your cancelation
National General may also request additional identifying information, such as your driver’s license number, social security number, or vehicle identification number (VIN).
Once you’ve gathered this information, choose the method you’d like to use to cancel your policy:
Call the National General Insurance Company (NGIC) customer service phone number: 1-888-293-5108.
Visit your local National General office and ask to speak to an insurance agent.
Mail a cancellation request letter to:
National General Accident & Health
PO Box 1070
Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27102-1070
Fax a written cancellation request to 1-888-344-3232
Mailed and faxed cancellation letters should be signed and dated, and include:
  • Your name and address as they appear on your National General policy
  • Phone number
  • Policy number
  • The date you would like your policy to end
Note: Before mailing or faxing a cancellation request, be sure to confirm the mailing address or fax number with a National General agent, and allow at least five to seven business days for receipt and processing.

Does National General charge a cancellation fee?

National General does not advertise a cancellation fee and most customers do not have to pay one. That said, some customers have reported a $50 fee for cancellation after their policy renewal date but before they’ve paid their new premium.

Can you get a refund if you paid in full?

National General policyholders who prepay for their car insurance coverage will typically receive a refund for any unused portion of their premium. Car insurance companies typically retain a small portion of your unused premium as an administrative fee for processing the refund, but you should get most of it back.

You can cancel your National General insurance policy at any time

National General policies can be canceled at any time, regardless of renewal dates. Canceling your National General policy is a good idea if:
  • You’ve found a lower car insurance rate with a different auto insurance provider
  • You plan to
    bundle your auto coverage
with homeowners or renters with another provider.
  • You’re
    selling your vehicle
and don’t intend to replace it with a new one.
If you’re canceling your National General policy because your rates are too high, you’ll need to set up a new policy with a different insurance provider first. By making sure your new policy start date aligns with your old policy’s cancellation date, you’ll avoid both a lapse in coverage—which can lead to higher premiums in the future—and driving uninsured, which is illegal.

You can use the
Jerry
app to
compare car insurance quotes
from dozens of providers to find the most affordable rates, and you can both set up your new policy and choose your start date right in the app.
As a bonus, you can use the Jerry app to adjust your auto insurance policy’s collision and comprehensive coverage deductibles and other coverage options to include or exclude insurance products you don’t want or need and keep your insurance premiums as low as possible.

Keep your insurance active when you sell your car

Unless you’re not planning to own a car in the future, dropping your coverage altogether is a bad idea—switch to a
non-owner policy
instead. Even if you don’t own a vehicle, a coverage lapse could lead to much higher insurance rates. A non-owner policy allows you to retain
liability coverage
and avoid a lapse, which can spell big savings both now and in the future.
