background
The 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is an Italian-designed mid-size SUV for the American market, and its stunning design and performance live up to what a luxury vehicle should be. However, the model has already seen four recalls due to mechanical and safety issues.
For years, Alfa Romeo has suffered a reputation for poor reliability, with lots of complaints about the brand’s electrical system, axle, and suspension. Hopes were high that the 2019 model would undo some of the damage, but those hopes were dashed when driver complaints started pouring in.

The most common 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio problems

Before we dive into the bad, let’s look at the good. The 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio reviews were remarkably positive. Reviewers from Car and Driver gave the car a score of 8/10, and Kelley Blue Book graded it 4.1 out of 5.
The Stelvio earned its accolades for bringing an entirely new look to the American SUV market with its stunning styling. That was combined with the make’s Quadrifoglio brand performance specifications, giving the 2019 model an edge to stand out among other luxury SUVs.
However, the recalls for the 2019 Stelvio have piled up—so far, there are four recalls by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Here’s a rundown of the reason behind each recall:
  • A coolant hose leak may cause engine stalling and overheating, and could increase the risk of a crash.
  • Adaptive cruise control deactivation failure could cause a crash when the adaptive cruise control system fails to shut off when the driver attempts to disable it.
  • The fuel gauge accuracy has been faulty in some cars, causing the gauge to indicate a fuel level that’s higher than the actual fuel level. This could cause the car to run out of gas and stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • ABS failure due to the rotor and shaft separating could diminish the car’s overall braking ability, potentially causing a crash.
Drivers have also complained about the car’s electrical system, including a battery that died prematurely and a water leak in the door that fried the electrical system.

Is the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio reliable?

JD Power has given the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio a quality and reliability score of 72/100. While that may be considered passable for Algebra class, it’s not really promising when it’s your mode of transportation that has a starting MSRP of $41,840.
