The 2017 Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover in a sea of plenty. While it has many great features for an affordable price, nothing visibly stands out about the Trax. It’s cute and compact and comes with a decent list of standard features, but it lacks exterior styling, power, and driving verve.
And while it does receive good reliability ratings, the three recalls and 68 total complaints against it don’t do it any favors.
Engine components received the most complaints, but drivers also noted issues with the electrical system and steering. Although there may be several lodged complaints about the 2017 Chevrolet Trax, the recalls bring greater concern.
The primary issue with the 2017 Trax, which received two recalls, is the lower control arm separating from the vehicle. If this happens, the front wheel will toe outward, interfering with the Trax’s steering and handling—perhaps resulting in a crash.
The recall was first issued on the 2015 to 2018 Chevy Trax and later on the 2017 to 2019 models due to improper joint welding in one or both of the front lower control arms.
The third recall was issued for the failure of the front airbags to deploy. Failure of the front airbags or seat belt pretensioners in a crash can result in serious injury to the driver and/or front passenger—and the 2017 Chevrolet Trax wasn’t the only car recalled for the issue.
In all affected vehicles, specific driving conditions could cause the airbag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test, which inhibits airbags from deploying while the test is running. So, if a crash happened during a diagnostic test, the airbags wouldn’t deploy. Yikes.
2017 Chevrolet Trax owners also have taken issue with some other aspects of the crossover:
