background
It’s hard not to love Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix hit show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. It’s the perfect balance of witty jokes and car lore that's kept people of all ages enthralled. The show has featured a whole host of
classic cars
, and we’ve done some digging to pull out our very favorites with some help from
InsideHook
These cars are classics, and like the comedians they were picked for, they have a quirky, and sometimes bizarre backstory.

#1: Porsche 356 Police Car

  • Guest: Barry Marder
  • Featured in S1, E7: “You Don’t Want to Offend a Cannibal”
  • Featured in S11, E12: “Big Lots and BevMo!”
As detailed by Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, in a strange, performance-motivated move, the Netherland’s police force (known as the Rijkspolitie) adopted the Porsche 356 in 1962. According to
Yahoo!
, they were part of an effort to stop
speeding motorists
along their national highway system. However, the police didn’t allow just any cop behind the wheel:
  • Drivers had to be at least 25 and married
  • Physically fit
  • Psychologically examined to ensure they were unlikely to take risks while driving
Of the dozens commissioned and paired with qualified police officers, only 40 of these cars are known to still exist, valued at $110-160,000.

#2: 1952 Volkswagen ‘Zwitter’ Beetle Coupe

  • Guest: Larry David
  • Featured in S1, E1: “Larry Eats a Pancake”
The first car ever featured on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, this uniquely styled, post-World War 2 Beetle is fondly referred to as a “Zwitter”, which roughly translates to “split” in English. According to
Hyman LTD
, this refers to the rear window, which is split down the middle by a rear styling pillar. The 1952 Zwitter Beetle was only produced for approximately 6 months before the rear window styling changed to the standard oval shape.
As a result, 1952 Zwitters are rare—and while many modern Beetles have restored or upgraded engines, the originals came with a quaint, punchy flat-four engine.

#3: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3

  • Guest: Alec Baldwin
  • S1, E4: “Just a Lazy Shiftless Bastard
The most powerful vehicle on our list of favs from Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (and perhaps the most visually stunning) is the 1970 Mercedes 300SEL 6.3. As reported by
Bring a Trailer
, this piece of history came equipped with a surprising amount of luxurious add-ons for a 50-year old car, including:
  • A self-leveling suspension
  • Power-adjustable seats
  • Real walnut burl trim accents
With a massive big-block V8 engine paired with a hefty four-speed manual transmission, the 1970 300SEL is hard not to love.

#4: 1963 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia

  • Guest: Joel Hodgson
  • Featured in S1, E5: “A Taste of Hell From on High”
While this swaggering, 60’s style Volkswagen may appear to some to be performance-oriented,
Autoweek
states that the 40-hp Karmann-Ghia has a shockingly slow 0-60 mph time of 28 seconds. Not being designed for speed or power, the Karmann-Ghia is all about looks; it appeared out of nowhere as a collaboration between Chrysler and Volkswagen.
Harking back to a time when cruising for fun was a favorite past-time, the 1963 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia emphasizes the need and benefits of taking things slow.
