background
Toyota
just unveiled its latest entry in the GR sports car line: the 2023 GR
Corolla
..
The
automaker
debuted its new GR sports car March 31, confirming speculations (and leaked images) that the newest entry in its performance line-up would be the compact hot hatch. It’s also the first time the Corolla has sported the GR moniker.

A performance Corolla

The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla will be powered by a compact G16E-GTS turbocharged three-banger, which it retains from the GR Yaris. The difference is the GR Corolla will be tuned to produce 300 horsepower—39 more than the Yaris—and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, with peak torque at 3,000-5,500 rpm and max horsepower coming in at 6,500 rpm. The hatchback features a triple exhaust system designed to reduce backpressure.
The engine is paired with Toyota’s GR-Four all-wheel-drive drivetrain, which lets drivers choose the power distribution to the front and rear wheels. Toyota noted the GR Corolla will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission to stay true to its rally roots.
The GR Corolla is built on Toyota’s GA-C platform, which the automaker said will feature enhanced frame reinforcements developed specifically for the vehicle.

The Toyota CR Corolla Core and Circuit Edition

The GR Corolla will be available in two trims: Core and Circuit Edition. Core will be available later in 2022 in white, black and Supersonic Red, with a color-keyed roof, rear lip spoiler, GR-Four branded rockers and wide fender flares.
The Circuit Edition is a limited-run model that will be available in 2023. It will be available in the same colors as Core plus Heavy Metal gray with the same rockers and fenders, but adds a forged carbon fiber roof, vented bulge hood and a rear spoiler.
The interior will rock suede-trimmed sport seats with red accents and a shift knob signed by master driver Akio Toyoda, also known as Morizo.
Toyota has yet to announce pricing for the 2023 GR Corolla.

Toyota GAZOO Racing

The “GR” stands for GAZOO Racing.
Toyota GAZOO Racing
is Toyota’s performance division. Its mission, Toyota says, is to push the limit to make “ever-better” cars using new technologies and solutions under motorsports conditions.
Previous vehicles released under the GAZOO Racing branding include the GR Supra and GR Yaris.

Plenty of speculation and leaked photos

As
Road & Track
previously reported, Toyota released two teaser images of the front fender bearing the GR-Four branding. The publication was one of many that speculated the then-unannounced vehicle would be a performance version of the
Corolla
.
Per
AutoEvolution
, embargoed images that were leaked to the web seemed to confirm the speculation of a compact Corolla hatchback, which would share the GR Yaris’s 1.6-liter three-banger turbo engine, but tuned to deliver more power.
