It's 2022 and high-performance plug-in hybrid sports cars no longer simply exist in some engineer's twisted dreams.
Mercedes
is making it happen.
According to
Mercedes-Benz
, the Mercedes-AMG ONE marks the first time a Formula 1 car is designed to be driven on public roads.
Its highly integrated powertrain includes a turbocharged combustion engine as well as four independent electric motors: one for each front wheel, one linked to the crankcase, and one in the turbocharger itself.

Teamwork makes the AMG dream work

The Mercedes-AMG One is the result of a collaborative effort between Mercedes-AMG and the Petronas Motorsport team. Because of this focus on performance, the team achieved a staggering top speed of over 217 mph and over 1,000 horsepower for the ONE.
It achieves this insane output by combining a 1.6-liter V6 hybrid engine featuring direct injection and electrically assisted turbocharging with four electric motors for a combined 450 kW.
This is all mated to an automated AMG SpeedShift 8-speed manual transmission and an 800-volt EQ Power+ drive system with adjustable drive modes.

High performance, high efficiency

The electric motors that power the front axle are capable of 50,000 revolutions per minute on their own, and the vehicle's ability to selectively distribute torque enables exceptionally high levels of vehicle dynamics.
This, in conjunction with the Race Start function and the removal of turbo lag, means the ONE is capable of going from 0 to 124 mph in under six seconds.
The automaker states the ONE's power and handling are unparalleled and that the vehicle's efficiency is just as impressive as its other attributes.
The regenerative braking system of an EQ Power+ hybrid drive system can recoup up to 80% of the energy lost during braking, allowing for a greater range of possible driving modes, ranging from fully electric to highly dynamic.
The end result is a maximized output that also maximizes efficiency, though the automaker has yet to share fuel economy figures just yet. The automaker has estimated an all-electric range of just 25 kilometers.
Visually, the ONE looks like it belongs on the track with its imposing proportions, numerous air intakes, and forged aluminum wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
The interior has been stripped down to its barest essentials, consisting only of lightweight bucket seats and a steering wheel inspired by Formula 1.
Per Mercedes, the ONE pushes the boundaries of what can be accomplished technologically and ushers in a fresh era in the annals of Mercedes-long Benz's and illustrious history.

Performance comes at a price

Did you think this thing would be affordable? If so, you'll be sorely disappointed; this top-of-the-line model from Mercedes will set you back a cool $2.7 million.
But even if you could shell out the cash for this beast, there are only 275 units—and they're all spoken for. Better luck next time.
