background
It’s hard not to pay attention when
McLaren
makes the news—something the company has a habit of doing. This time it’s because of a potential new vehicle, at least according to McLaren’s CEO. Perhaps the idea isn’t so far-fetched, but brands like Porsche, Audi, and BMW are all dominating the luxury SUV market. Is McLaren just spitballing ideas, or do they really think they can pull off a McLaren SUV?
Whatever McLaren decides to do, we think it’s a great idea to take a second look at your

A McLaren SUV could become more than just a fantasy

It’s not a secret that McLaren got a new CEO in July of 2022: Michael Reiters, as
Motor1
reports. Reiters has a long tracklist of successful work at other key automotive companies and was quoted in a July interview, quipping, "I developed an
SUV at Ferrari
, I developed an SUV at Porsche, so I love SUVs. But [McLaren] won't do it for me.”
Despite his words, he did go on to explain that a McLaren SUV is very much a possibility. Considering he’s not even been at McLaren for a year, perhaps Reiters may be able to get the ball rolling if he’s persistent.

Does it even make sense for a McLaren SUV to be introduced?

It certainly seems that way. Porsche has seen success with the Cayenne and Macan sales, which Motor1 indicates exceeded those of all other Porsche models combined in 2021.
Motor1 explains that Lamborghini also just celebrated its best half-year sales performance ever thanks to the Urus, which comprised 60% of all of Lamborghini’s vehicle sales. Even Ferrari is poised to launch its first SUV before the end of 2022.
So, it’s not a matter of a luxury, high-performance McLaren SUV not being feasible; they’re more practical than the low clearance, high price tag supercars these companies specialize in. But if not, then what’s holding the McLaren SUV back?

It’s possible that McLaren is keeping their SUV plans under wraps

The company hasn’t ignored the possibility of a McLaren SUV. After all, McLaren debuted a one-off electric SUV racer that was built for the Extreme E championship.
Earlier in 2022,
Autocar
claimed in an article that McLaren was already working on an electric SUV. The mystery vehicle was reportedly set to launch sometime mid-decade. Perhaps we’ll never see a Mclaren SUV, but with a recent history of serious developmental interest in SUVs, maybe they’re being ultra-secretive.
