background
Lexus
offers some of the best vehicles on the used car market. One vehicle, though, doesn't often come up in conversation. Lexus' IS F model, which had a pretty good run almost a decade ago, deserves a bit more attention than it's getting.
What makes this luxurious sedan so special and is it worth getting? Let's take a look.
Lexus' brand is known forits high-performance and luxury features. It's no surprise that the Lexus IS F 4-door sedan is no exception to that rule. It only ran from 2008 to 2014, but those few short years made it one of the brand's more popular vehicles.
The IS F model was designed by Lexus' engineer, Yukihiko Yaguchi. He wanted the vehicle to not only offer premium performance but also to feel just as luxurious as other Lexus cars built before the IS F's debut, according to
MotorBiscuit
.
Lexus' IS F was a nod to the ‘80s before the brand was even a thing. Toyota's plans for a luxury division were referred to as the "Circle F". The first model produced under the Lexus name came out in 1989 with the LS 400 model name, or Flagship One, according to
Edmunds
When the IS F came out, it was the beginning of the F Series lineup, and it was produced to go toe to toe with its rivals, the BMW M3, Audi RS4, and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

What the Lexus IS F offered in terms of specs

The Lexus IS F ran with a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produced 416 hp and 371 lb-ft of torque. Paired with it was an eight-speed automatic transmission. This combination allowed the sedan to go from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds.
As for standard features, the IS F came with front-seat knee airbags, as well as side and full-length head curtain airbags. It also had anti-lock brakes, brake assist, traction control, and stability control.
Available features include satellite radio, park assist, DVD navigation system, backup camera, adaptive cruise control, 14-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth capability.

Is it worth buying on the used market?

To get it on the used market would probably run you around $20,000 to $35,000, depending on the year, mileage, and condition. To decide if it's worth it or not, consider a few different things. The first thing to mull over is how reliable it is.
MotorBiscuit reports that, on average, the Lexus IS F costs around $3,500 for a 5-year period for repairs. That's pretty good considering some sedans could double and triple that price. Another thing to check out is how well it's stood up to other owners.
According to Edmunds, it has received a near-perfect score. With 25 reviews from all model years, it falls in the 4.9-star range out of five. Most of the IS F owners report that they haven't had any issues with it despite having it for a few years.
Almost all of them rave about how well it drives and how smooth the suspension can be. The biggest issues reported were the squeaky Brembo brakes and sticky door seals. Some drivers weren't too pleased that there wasn't a manual gearbox option.
