background
Electric vehicles are growing in popularity at an exponential rate, but not everyone is ready to make the switch. Plus, EV’s higher initial price tag can deter more scrupulous consumers from taking the plunge, even if it saves them on fuel and
repair costs in the long run
. Thankfully,
hybrid vehicles
—in addition to being affordable, accessible, and fuel-efficient—continue to rank very highly when it comes to owner satisfaction.
Hybrid drivers get the best of both worlds, saving money on fuel while also still being able to rely on the convenience of fueling up at a gas station in a pinch. There are also many styles of hybrids to meet almost any driver’s expectations, from plug-in vehicles to ones that charge through regenerative braking.
According to a recent study from
Consumer Reports
, owner satisfaction ranked nearly five points higher on average when gas-only models were compared side-by-side to their respective hybrid versions.

Highly-ranked hybrids

If you’ve been a longtime fan of the Ford Escape, Toyota Camry or the Hyundai Sonata, you just might want to give a hybrid version a try. With the Ford Escape, drivers reported that the hybrid version of the classic SUV is a much smoother, quieter ride than the gas-powered Escape.
The hybrid version of the Escape also predictably delivers much more highly in fuel efficiency, with 34 mpg overall—8 mpg better than the gas-powered version.
If you’re seeking an accessible, affordable ride, it’s hard to beat the ultra-popular Toyota Camry, unless you’re driving the hybrid version. The 47 mpg rivals that of the
Toyota Prius
, but in the form of a roomier midsized sedan. It also has a quieter and smoother powertrain, typical to many hybrid and electric cars.
Lastly, there’s the Hyundai Sonata. The hybrid version of the Sonata ranked a soaring 17 points over its gas-only counterpoint, most likely due to its excellent fuel efficiency. It boasts an overall 44 mpg average, 13 mpg higher than the gas-only Sonata.
