Honoring Bugatti's Daughter: the New Bugatti Chiron and Chiron Sport L'Ébé

There are rare sports cars, and then there’s the Bugatti Chiron L'Ébé. What makes this lake blue hyper car so special?

background
Bugattis may be too expensive for most buyers, but like most European
hyper car
makers, when it comes to its business origins, the company began as a humble, family affair.
That close-knit ethos has inspired the brand to honor its founder’s daughter, L'Ébé Bugatti. To mark the end of the company’s beloved Chiron, three special edition models were hand-built and named after L'Ébé. All of them already have owners.
What, besides its name, makes the car so special?

L'Ébé Bugatti—the new Chiron’s namesake

Ettore Bugatti, who founded Bugatti in 1909, had six children in his lifetime, but he held L'Ébé, his eldest, especially close. She went on to chronicle her father’s life in the 1967 book The Bugatti Story.
The Bugatti family hasn’t owned the company Ettore started since 1963, and it’s changed hands a few times since then as well. But every revival of the brand has done its part to honor its namesake family, and Volkswagen Group, the latest owner, is no different.
The brand’s two modern nameplates, Veyron and Chiron, honor legendary French race car drivers Pierre Veyron and Louis Chiron, both of whom won many Grand Prix titles behind the wheel of Bugattis.

Bugatti Chiron L'Ébé—two variants, three cars

You’d think that limiting the Chiron L'Ébé production count to three would make these cars rare enough, but Bugatti went a step further by making the special edition model under two trim levels, the Bugatti Chiron and Bugatti Chiron Sport.
For both variants, the additions of the L'Ébé edition are all aesthetic.
Motor Authority
says the cars come with exposed blue-tinted carbon-fiber bodywork inside and out.
Gold accents line the exterior, and images of legendary Bugatti models can be found on the inside door panels. L'Ébé’s signature is imprinted throughout the car as a finishing touch.
Under the hood, both Chiron models offer 1,480 hp thanks to their 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W-16 engines. More carbon-fiber components shave 40 lbs. off of the Sport model.

Bugatti Chiron ownership costs

Bugatti didn’t share prices for the Chiron L'Ébés, perhaps out of respect for their buyers’ privacy, but you can be certain these cars weren’t cheap. The standard Chirons cost $3.3 million a piece. Opting for a Chiron Sport adds $495,000 to that price.
Most cars lose value as soon as they’re driven off the lot, but the extreme rarity of the Bugatti means it will only appreciate over time.
That, and the insanely high car insurance premiums for these cars, encourage drivers to use them sparingly and cover them under agreed-value policies rather than regular car insurance.
