The

Corvette has few equals in the automotive world, and there are even fewer cars that have the rich history that the Corvette has. The Corvette, especially the ones from the ‘60s and ‘70s, are classics that are unforgettable for anyone who's interested in cars.
Here's a look at the 1979 Corvette, one of the coolest and smoothest Corvettes that Chevy's ever made.

The 1979 Corvette kept the classic design going strong

The Corvette from the ‘60s and ‘70s were classic cars that were very popular in their day, but they actually only represent two generations of the Corvette's history.
The second-generation Corvette lasted from 1963 to 1967, while the third-generation Corvette lasted from 1968 to 1982.
According to
Car and Driver
, Chevy didn't really rock the boat with the 1979 model year. Even though that generation was over a decade old at the time, it was still selling very well, and Americans enjoyed what the 1979 Corvette had to offer.
One of the main changes that Chevy made between the two generations of Corvette was in its body design. Chevy kept the smooth look that every Corvette owner knows and loves, but there are some obvious differences. Inside the cabin, Chevy also made some upgrades.

Chevy gave the 1979 Corvette some much-needed upgrades

This was the ‘70s, though, so the updates aren't anything special compared to modern cars. For example, in terms of tech, Chevy gave the 1979 Corvette an AM/FM radio as standard. It also had halogen high-beam headlights, which were new at the time.
When it comes to seats Chevy added new bucket seats that became standard for each model.
Cabin updates aside, Chevy also gave the 1979 Corvette a small upgrade in power. The Corvette was still powered by a 5.7-liter V-8, but it was now slightly more powerful than before.
Chevy offered two engine options on this version of the Corvette. Both were 5.7-liter V-8s, and the standard version made 195 horsepower, while the more powerful version made 225 horsepower.

In comparison, the 1977 Corvette was not that different from the 1979 Corvette, but its engine was significantly weaker. The 1977 Corvette also had a 5.7-liter V-8, but its two engine options only made 180 horsepower and 210 horsepower respectively.
Chevy sold the 1977 Corvette at a starting price tag of about $12,000 and adjusted for inflation, that equals to about $46,000 today. Many Americans jumped at the chance to buy this Corvette since it was a stylish symbol of American muscle.
Even though the 1979 Corvette sold well, it was definitely showing its age. This was a complaint that some critics had at the time, and it seems like Chevy listened since the Corvette was finally redesigned for the 1984 model year.
Like any other Corvette, the 1979 Corvette can still be a good purchase today. Depending on its condition, it can be bought for about $10,000. It won't be the fastest Corvette on the road, but it'll definitely look as cool as any Corvette.
