The Chevy Traverse Has a Unique Distinction Among Consumer Report’s Best SUVs

The Chevy Traverse was the only American SUV made Consumer Reports’ Top Ten SUVs list for 2022. What makes the new Traverse so great?

background
Of all the SUVs offered by domestic manufacturers, only one American
automaker
made Consumer Report’s list of current SUV best buys.
Consumer Reports (CR) compiled a list of the top 10 SUVs currently on the market, luxury brands excluded. The rankings are based on the SUV’s road test performance, reliability and owner satisfaction as well as the availability of certain safety features. Only one SUV from an American automaker made the list—and it came in dead last.

The 2022 Chevy Traverse made the cut

As
Consumer Reports’ Jon Linkov writes
, the 2022 Chevy Traverse boasts a quiet interior and a comfortable ride with responsive handling. This makes it a great alternative to its full-sized counterparts the Tahoe and Suburban. The Traverse ranks fifth overall out of the 14 three-row midsize SUVs reviewed by Consumer Reports.
The publication lauded the updated Traverse’s front- and second row captain’s seats as well as its roomy third row, as well as the availability of an eight-passenger version in a lower trim. It also complimented the Traverse’s intuitive infotainment system, which features a large screen and plenty of features as well as easy-to-use buttons and climate controls.
Linkov noted that its 3.6-liter V6 engine delivers great acceleration, but also the lowest overall fuel economy of all SUVs on the list, with an average combined gas mileage of 20 mpg. Nothing special, but par for the course, per CR.

Is the 2022 Chevy Traverse reliable?

CR has reported in the past that it expects the 2022 Chevy Traverse to have average reliability when compared to the average new vehicle, which is based on data from previous model years. It’s been recalled once for roof rail airbag issues by NHTSA.
In its road test
report
, CR recommends buying the LT trim level with leather seats for the best balance between cost and features. Otherwise, despite its ease of use and modern appearance, the publication noted that the interior feels “low rent” for a vehicle that can go for more than $50,000. The 2022 Chevy Traverse starts at around $33,700 at the low end.

A unique distinction

The lack of American automakers on CR’s ‘10 Best SUVs You Can Buy Right Now’ list is telling of the less-than-stellar quality vehicles being pumped out by domestic manufacturers. Kia topped the list with its 2022 Telluride, while
Toyota
, Hyundai and Subaru all had multiple entries on the list.
With that in mind, it can be considered a pretty great distinction that Chevrolet is the only American automaker that can keep pace with its much-lauded Japanese and Korean competitors. Maybe not what they’d want to hear in Detroit, but it’s better than not making the list at all.
