background
The
Volkswagen
Passat is a popular sedan—and it’s also recommended by Consumer Reports, having scored a 71 out of 100 on its overall rating. The Passat has a lot going for it—with smooth and responsive acceleration, braking, and handling, it’s certainly a joy to drive.
Though it’s held back by a middling reliability score, the Passat is certainly a worthwhile, appealing option for those in the market for a solid sedan.
But what about the trim levels offered by Volkswagen? Choosing between the three may seem difficult at first, but we’ve laid out the essentials of each.

Volkswagen offers a few different trim levels for the 2022 Passat, so which is right for you?

1st Place: Passat R-Line

The Passat R-Line which is priced at $29,295, offers a fair amount of extras over the base model SE, which include:
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • An adaptive front lighting system
  • A rear spoiler
  • A leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters
  •  Touchscreen with proximity sensing – Responds as your hand approaches the screen to show hidden icons.
Most of the changes between the R-Line and the 2nd place Passat SE are cosmetic, and some drivers might not feel that the upgrades are worth an extra $2,000. But for those who want a little more style added to both the interior and exterior of their Passat, the R-Line sits comfortably as the mid-level trim option.

2nd Place: Passat SE

The SE trim level represents all the essential features with no fluff included. However, even though it’s the base Passat trim level, it doesn’t skimp on modern amenities. Starting at $27,295, the Passat SE comes with:
  • Standard LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights
  • Dual-zone climate control—a feature not usually available in base model trim options
  • A host of standard safety features, including emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control (ACC)
  • Apple CarPlay
    and Android compatibility
All Passat trim levels come with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that offers 28 mpg on the highway, which, according to
Consumer Reports
, is standard for its class and size.

3rd Place: Passat Limited Edition

The top-of-the-line Passat trim level is the Passat Limited Edition, which isn’t far off from the R-Line in terms of price. Beginning at $30,295, the Passat Limited Edition entices buyers with everything included in the R-Line, plus:
  • A power trunk lid
  • Driver’s seat
and outboard mirrors, both with memory capability
  • Leather seating and heated second-row seats
The Limited Edition Passat isn’t much different than the R-Line, but for drivers who are interested in owning something “limited”, Volkswagen only produced 1,973 units (the year the Passat’s production began).
Why?
2022 is the last year for the Volkswagen Passat
—the German manufacturer is moving on, gearing up to begin producing EVs at Passat-producing factory plants.
