If you’ve lost or damaged your New York State
title, you can mail a completed Application for Duplicate Title and a check or money order for $20 to the DMV and receive a replacement. What you’ll need to get a replacement title in New York
The first step to getting your duplicate title is to gather the necessary information and documents. The New York DMV requires:
Vehicle information: Your car’s VIN or HIN
Owner information: Proof of identity, such as a photocopy of your NY driver’s license
or non-driver ID A notarized Power of Attorney (if applicable)
How to apply for a replacement title in New York
You can apply for a New York replacement title in person or by mail. To make your application, download the application form and follow the instructions:
If you’re applying due to a name change, death of owner, or power of attorney, first read Section 4 for instructions
Complete and sign Sections 1 and 2
If submitting by mail, make copies of your proof of identity and enclose
If you’re applying due to a legal name change, you may also need to mail your certificate of marriage or divorce (check the instructions on the form). If you’re applying due to initiating power of attorney, you will need to mail your notarized power of attorney.
The fee for a duplicate title is $20. Make any checks or money orders payable to “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.” The mailing address for the Title Bureau (also listed at the top of the form) is:

How long does it take to get a replacement title in New York?
Your New York replacement title will arrive by mail, and the bureau works to complete duplicate orders as soon as possible. Typically, your application will be processed within 72 hours and mailed thereafter.
When do you need a replacement title?
Your title is one of the most important documents associated with your car—you can’t sell a car or prove legal ownership without it. So if you can’t find your title or it’s damaged in any way, it’s time to get a replacement.

If you know where your original title is, do not apply for a replacement. As with your proof of registration and proof of insurance, keep your title in a secure and accessible place for when you need it.
If you’ve paid off your car loan
and want the lienholder removed from the title, you’ll need to complete a New York lien release form, called Notice of Recorded Lien (MV-901). You do not need a replacement title if you’ve completed your lien release form, although you’re welcome to get a “clean” one by mailing your original title, the lien release, and a $20 check or money order to the Title Bureau address listed above.
