Decker Towers
lacks in stature, it makes up for in practicality. The subsidized public housing establishment contains 161 one-bedroom and efficiency apartments, six of which are wheelchair accessible. With an emphasis on community, Decker also offers a dining area, a library, and a tenant organization that holds events for the residents. Construction of the turnkey project was completed in 1971 by the Pizzagalli Construction Company and was immediately sold to the city of Burlington. Originally named 203 St. Paul Street after its address, the building was home to the Burlington Housing Authority administration offices until 2002. It wasn’t until the next year that it would take on the name Decker Towers.
A big renovation project began in 2009 after the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was passed. Hallway floors were replaced, the parking lot was repaved, and a thorough weatherproofing of the building was undertaken. Residents remained in the building during this time, and it was completed ahead of schedule.
Can I visit Decker Towers?
Technically, yes. You can visit Decker Towers since it is a building on a public street. We wouldn’t suggest going out of your way to see it since it really is just an apartment building. You also will not likely be able to get inside as it is city-owned housing unless you know someone living there.
What to do at Decker Towers
Decker Towers is not much of a tourist destination, but Vermont’s largest city of Burlington has some fun to offer:
- Lake Champlain Cruises: See the sights on this body of water bordering Vermont, New York, and even a small part of Canada. Dock out of Burlington and enjoy lunch and dinner cruises, or the occasional dance cruise if that’s more your style.
- Flynn Center for the Performing Arts: This 1,411-seat auditorium hosts a wide variety of shows to offer something for the patron of any art. From the touring Broadway production of Hairspray to the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the performance calendar in Burlington is always packed.
- Church Street Marketplace: The four street-long plaza can fulfill your dining, shopping, and entertainment needs in one culturally celebrated location. This marketplace is also a great place to enjoy a casual stroll since it is permanently traffic-free.

Although Vermont isn’t home to skyscrapers like

or Chicago
, that doesn’t mean there aren’t architectural achievements worth noting. Two that belong on this list are the Billings Library
and Shelburne Farms
. Constructed in 1885, the Billings Library features an iconic domed canopy, and its brick design has been deemed striking and culturally significant enough to land it on the National Register of Historic Places. Its functionality never changed either, as today it is used as a University of Vermont study hall.
Shelburne Farms is a massive estate with houses and farm buildings sprawling across 1,400 acres. Something was clearly in the water in the 1880s because this impressive feat was constructed in 1886 and has remained an iconic display of design and architecture to this day.
