Will Stuff Fly Out Of a Truck Bed?

I recently got my first pickup truck and I was going to use it to move some furniture. I’m kind of worried that things will fly out the back of it though. Is that something I need to be concerned about? Will things fly out the back of my truck bed while I drive?

Depending on what exactly you’re moving, how heavy it is, and how faster you’re going, there may or may not be a risk of stuff flying out of a truck bed. You may need to take steps to secure your cargo.
The lighter something is, the more likely it is to fly out. Heavy furniture shouldn’t normally be a problem. But just to be safe, here are some things you use to keep your cargo from sliding around or flying off:
  • Ratchet straps
  • Cargo nets
  • Bungie cords
Basically, it has to do with momentum and lift. If you’re driving fast enough to create enough wind force to lift your cargo, it’ll likely fly out. Items with large flat surfaces that could catch wind from underneath are more likely to be at risk. Put things like desk and tables upside down to reduce the likelihood of trouble. Drive slowly and carefully if you’re worried.
