Why is city driving so difficult?
I’m from a rural area and recently moved to a medium-sized city. I love my new lifestyle, but city driving gives me massive anxiety, and I feel like driving is just *impossible*. Why is city driving more difficult than driving in less urban areas?

Nice going on your new digs! Sorry to hear that you’re not feeling very welcome on the roads, but with a little common knowledge you’ll be on your way to pro-level city driving. City driving is usually more difficult because of:
- Traffic: One challenge you may experience when driving in a city is longer travel times due to lower speed limits and traffic jams during rush hour—which is pretty much constant in a city.
- Aggressive drivers: It’s common to experience many antagonistic or rude drivers while driving in the city. They may cut you off, honk their horns, or not let you into their lane.
- Parking:City parkingcan be a nightmare, even for seasoned drivers. If parallel parking isn’t one of your strong suits, street parking with the added pressure of narrow spaces and all the bustle around your car won’t help.
Here are some tips for navigating city driving:
- Leave early to get where you’re going on time. Once you establish a rhythm, this aspect will become much easier.
- Allow enough space between your car and the car in front of you in case you have to brake suddenly.
- Practice courteous driving behaviors like signaling and letting someone over into your lane. This might encourage the drivers around you to behave more positively.
- Avoid parallel street parking when possible.
- If available, try parking in a protected lot or a parking garage.
