How Do I Fix Knee Pain From Driving?
I drive long distances for work and it’s taking a toll on my body. In particular, my right knee is killing me. Why does my knee hurt so bad when I’m driving?

I’m sorry to hear that your knee is bothering you! Driving can certainly take a toll on the body, especially if you’re doing a lot of it. The most likely reason that your knee hurts from driving is poor posture and an unnatural driving position. However, you could also be suffering from osteoarthritis, which is caused by the gradual wearing down of the cartilage in your kneecaps.
If poor posture is to blame for your knee pain, here are some ways to improve it:
- Keep your knees slightly bent when driving. Fully extending your leg will result in your knee locking, which is bad for your knee and dangerous in the event of an accident.
- Adjust your seat back and tilt it forward slightly. This will allow your leg to be supported from hip to knee.
- Adjust your headrest. Your headrest should be even with the back of your head. This will help keep your back straight.
- Consider a car seat cushion for extra support. An ergonomic design will help reduce pain and improve posture.
Consult your doctor before trying to fix the knee pain yourself, as the pain could be symptomatic of a greater issue—like osteoarthritis or even sciatica.
