Congratulations on the new addition to your family! Traveling with a newborn requires a bit of planning, so it’s good to start thinking about it now. It’s important to look into car seats appropriate for her weight, that you bring another adult, and you plan frequent breaks when traveling with a newborn.
Of course, you’ll want to make sure you have a safe car seat. Your newborn should ride in the back seat of your car in a rear-facing car seat.
On long trips, an adult should always sit in the backseat of a car to monitor an infant. This also makes it easier on the driver, who can then give their full attention to the road.
Healthcare professionals recommend that babies not be kept in a car seat for longer than two hours at a time. This is because babies can sometimes slump over awkwardly and may wind up in a position that impedes their breathing. With a newborn, plan to stop every hour.
Be sure to take your baby out of her car seat and let her lie flat on a blanket. The idea is to make sure she is breathing well and her circulation is good.
So, yes, you can travel with your newborn daughter, but you may want to make your final decision until after she’s born. After all, you may not feel up to a five-hour drive, and parties can always wait!
