How can you tell if a Ford Mustang is a V6?

My son wants to buy an older Ford Mustang for his first vehicle. I know some Mustangs are V6s and some are V8s, and I would rather buy a V6, but I don’t know how to tell the difference. How can you tell if a Mustang is a V6 just by looking at it?

There are a few different ways you can tell if the
Mustang
you’re looking at has a V6 engine.
Ford
stopped producing
Mustangs
with V6 engines after the 2017 model, so you can automatically rule out a V6 in any 2018 or newer model.
Other than model year, here are some other tips for figuring out what type of engine you’re dealing with:
  • Look under the hood: if the dealership will let you, the easiest way to determine if an engine is a V6 is to count the cylinders. Six cylinders equal a V6.
  • Rear ornament: if the back of the vehicle is sporting the famous horse, it’s probably a V6. V8 Mustangs are labeled with a “GT” instead.
Once you find your
Mustang
, make sure you get a good car insurance policy to go with it. Insurance premiums for first-time drivers can be a little scary, but you can find a great rate in just under a minute with the
