What would cause oil to spray all over the engine?
I just had a terrifying situation unfold on a highway. I was driving my 2005 Camry from New Jersey to Binghamton. Without warning, my engine started acting all crazy, and when I pulled over there was a ton of oil everywhere. What would cause oil to spray all over the engine like that?

Oil could spray all over the engine of your Toyota Camry if you have a blown gasket or a broken seal. Alternatively, if you’ve recently had an oil change, the cap may not have been put on correctly or could be damaged.
In any of these events, the oil will heat up and spray out from wherever the weakness is. And unfortunately, this isn’t a quick and easy roadside fix, either. You’ll need to get towed to a mechanic to have the oil spill cleaned up, the engine diagnosed and repaired, and fresh oil put in.
It sounds like your car wouldn’t start if you tried, but don’t try. Oil could have gotten on electrical components or in places prone to excessive heat, posing a very serious fire risk. It could have also slicked up belts and pulleys, causing slippages that may result in more engine damage.
