What should I do when driving through a curve?

I got my license recently so I’m still gaining driving experience. My neighborhood has a lot of windy roads so I’d like to know—what should I do to help me get used to driving through a curve?

The early stages of being a licensed driver present a lot of learning curves. Whether you’re driving on a road with lots of twists and turns or a street with one sharp curve, here are some tips on what to do in order to stay safe:
  • Take it slow. There is never a good reason to navigate a curved road at a high speed—you could easily cause an accident if you don’t slow down upon approaching the curve.
  • Go easy on steering. When you drive toward a curve, maneuver your car slightly in the opposite direction of the bend to help keep your vehicle centered. Jerking your steering wheel to either side could cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
  • Accelerate gradually. As you come out of the bend, gently apply the gas to maintain speed.
  • Pay attention. Most roadways will have a sign warning you about the curve ahead. Keep your eyes on the road so that you aren’t taken by surprise.
