What is the difference between Honda Shadow models?

I’m hoping to buy a used Honda Shadow, but I’m not sure which one to get. I didn’t realize there were different models! What’s the difference between the Shadow models?

The Honda Shadow is a line of motorcycles put out by Honda that dates back to 1983. Honda Shadows are cruiser-type motorcycles that feature high and wide handlebars (think a classic Harley Davidson). They offer a more comfortable ride with notably different posture than you’d have riding a sportbike. But some Shadows offer a sportier riding stance.
The main difference between Honda Shadow models is that they vary in aesthetics, handlebar configuration, and engine.
Here is a sample of some of the various Honda Shadow models that have come out over the years:
  • 1985 Honda Shadow VT500C—491 cc SOHC 3-valve engine with 6-speed overdrive transmission
  • 1987 Honda Shadow VT1100—Generated 67 horsepower with 72.3 ft-lbs of torque with its 1099 cc 4-stroke V-twin engine
  • 1997 Honda Shadow VT750C2 ACE—Generated 88 horsepower @ 9000 RPM with 48.7 ft-lbs of torque with its 745 ccm V2 four-stroke engine
  • 1997 Honda Shadow Spirit—Generated 60 horsepower with 70.1 ft-lbs of torque with its 4-stroke liquid-cooled 1099cc V-twin engine
  • 2009 Honda Shadow American Classic Edition VT750—749 cc V-twin engine with tons of chrome accents and bullet-style mufflers
There’s a lot of variation in the Shadow line—and with decades of used motorcycles to potentially buy, you’re bound to find one that’s a great fit!
