What is the best route from New York to Phoenix?
I’m visiting my girlfriend’s family in Phoenix and since we’re bringing our dog with us, we’ll need to drive. Luckily our dog is pretty good in the car, but we still want to get her there as quickly as possible! What route should we take from New York to Phoenix?

- Start on I-78 West.
- Exit onto I-81 South towards Harrisburg, then follow the signs to I-76 West
- Continue onto I-70 West and follow the signs for Columbus, Ohio
- To break up the trip, stay in Columbus for the night, then take I-70 West out of the city
- Once you enter Indiana, follow the road signs for I-465 South
- Follow the road signs back to I-70 West towards St. Louis, Missouri
- Follow the signs for Springfield, Missouri. Stop here for the night to break up your trip
- Take I-44 West into Oklahoma
- Follow the signs for John Kilpatrick Turnpike, then exit onto I-40 West
- You’ll pass through Texas on I-40, then enter New Mexico. Stop in Tucumcari, New Mexico for the night to break up your trip
- In the morning, get back on I-40 and drive into Arizona. Follow the signs for AZ-77 South
- Turn onto AZ-377 South, then follow road signs to get to AZ-260 West
- Turn left onto AZ-87 and follow the road signs until you reach Phoenix!
If you’re driving with a dog, you may also want to stop more often to give your pup some rest. It might be fun to rent a campsite instead of a hotel room to give your dog some more time outside and space to run around. This might make the trip more fun for you, too!
