My driving instructor keeps referring to SIPDE as a way to fine-tune your driving habits. I must have zoned out when she discussed it because I don’t recall what that abbreviation means. How can you use SIPDE to help yourself be a better driver?

, as it will improve your decision-making skills:- Scan or search: Look ahead about 15 to 20 seconds in front of you. Do this consistently while you’re driving.
- Identify: By searching ahead, you can identify potential hazards in or around the roadway. This might include emergency vehicles, accidents, or other motorists.
- Predict: Think about what other drivers might do. It’s perhaps the most difficult step, but anticipating the moves of others can help you make the right move yourself.
- Decide: Make a decision about what you’re going to do. Oftentimes, you may only have seconds to think about your move, but use your training and experience to help you.
- Execute: Follow through on whatever decision you just made, whether you need to slow down, switch lanes, brake to a stop, or something else.
