What is a kill switch in a car?

All of a sudden, my neighborhood is having a significant problem with car theft. While I’ve already installed a new anti-theft device, my dad told me I should consider a kill switch. What exactly is a car kill switch?

A kill switch in a car is a button or device hidden somewhere on a vehicle that prevents it from starting. You simply flip the switch, and no one can start the car until the kill switch is turned off.
Kill switches are a bit different from most anti-theft devices in that they’re inconspicuous, whereas an anti-theft device’s visibility is meant to act as a deterrent itself.
Some of the most common locations for car kill switches are:
  • Ignition wire
  • Fuse box
  • Remote control
  • Car battery
  • Fuel line
Car insurance may cover car theft
