Is the Ford Explorer a full-size SUV? What class is it?

I’m selling my current car, a Chevy Equinox, and I want something bigger. I was thinking about getting a Ford Explorer. It looks bigger than my Equinox, but is the Ford Explorer a full-size SUV or mid-size? How many rows of seats does it have?

The Ford Explorer is not a full size SUV but technically a midsize SUV. The Ford Expedition is the Explorer’s larger full-size SUV sibling. Modern midsize SUVs usually (but not always) have a third row, though some, like the Honda Passport, trade in the third row for added cargo space.
The Ford Explorer is bigger than the Chevy Equinox by almost every metric—there’s more head, shoulder, hip, and leg room. But the Explorer is significantly smaller in cargo space behind the rear seat—you might end up playing luggage Tetris on long road trips with passengers. That’s the price you end up paying for that third row of seating.
You should take the Ford Explorer for a
test drive
and consider trying a few 7 to 8 seat competitors, like the Honda Pilot, Subaru Ascent, or Chevy Traverse. If you’d rather have cargo space than that third row, try the Subaru Outback, Honda CR-V, or Mazda CX-5.
