Is a Ford Ranger a good first car?

Would a Ford Ranger be a good choice for my son’s first car? I found one that’s within my price range, but I don’t want to get a vehicle that’s not safe for him.

A Ford Ranger isn’t the best choice for a first car…but it’s possible.
While the Ford Ranger is a pretty reliable vehicle with average ownership costs, buying a truck as your teen’s first car comes with a big learning curve. The handling in a truck is very different from the handling in a car, so your child will be at an increased risk of an accident if they do not have enough practice driving a truck.
One advantage of the Ford Ranger over other trucks, however, is that it’s cheaper to insure. When compared with other vehicles in its class,
Ford Ranger insurance costs
are cheaper by an average of over $100, making it a good option financially for you and your teen.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you should completely write off the Ranger. If you’re willing to spend some extra time teaching your son how to drive a truck safely and your son prefers the look of pickup trucks over sedans, the Ford Ranger could certainly be his first car. However, this means you’ll have to teach him to practice
safe driving
at all times. Not to mention, going beyond your state’s insurance limits to be protected on the road. This could mean upgrading his policy with
full-coverage insurance
, as well as
towing and labor coverage
.
No matter which car your son chooses—good luck!
