How to replace problematic 2014 ford escape lug nuts
My 2014 Ford Escape had a flat tire, and the wrench didn’t fit, so I had to get a tow. When they replaced my tire, they also replaced my lug nuts. Is this normal? What’s the deal with these 2014 Ford Escape lug nuts?

Ugh, we’re sorry to hear about this ordeal you went through! It’s probably no comfort, but similar stories have happened to a lot of Ford Escape owners through the years. So let’s talk about these controversial 2014 Ford Escape lug nuts.
For reasons unbeknownst to anyone, Ford engineers fitted the wheels of the 2014 Ford Escape with capped lug nuts. These lug nuts have a steel core with an aluminum cap on top of them. Over time, these caps swell and get disfigured, making it incredibly difficult to remove them.
This has been a known problem for years, but as of now, Ford hasn’t done anything to resolve the issue. There was even a lawsuit over these lug nuts years ago, but it was dismissed. Leaving Ford Escape drivers frustrated with surprise bills for new lug nuts when they get new tires, or worse—stranded on the side of the road and calling a tow truck as you experienced.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is you can replace those shoddy 2014 Ford Escape lug nuts with solid, uncapped ones that won’t succumb to that long-term swelling.
You’ll need 12x1.5 lug nuts. Eisen makes factory-style one-piece lug nuts that are quite popular among people who’ve encountered this issue.
