How much will it cost to fix the pistons in my car?

My car’s oil has been leaking a lot recently and I just noticed today that my exhaust was emitting blue smoke. I looked it up and it seems like that means there’s something wrong with my pistons. What can I expect to pay to get my pistons fixed?

You’re definitely right that the pistons are at fault, and from the sounds of it, you’re probably going to have to get your piston rings replaced.
Unfortunately, fixing the pistons or replacing piston rings is pretty expensive—a safe estimate is at least $1000, but prices can range as high as $5000 depending on your mechanic and how many need to be replaced.
Piston rings themselves aren’t all that costly, averaging out to around $100, but the labor cost is steep due to how intricate and complicated the job of replacing them is. A mechanic will have to totally disassemble your engine to get to the pistons, after which the engine will have to be reassembled. In total, this can easily be a 15+ hour process.
On the bright side, your car will be back in working order, and you probably won’t need to have your pistons fixed again for a long while.
