How much will a car air filter replacement cost?

I’ve started noticing that my car’s been getting worse mileage than usual and the exhaust pipe is emitting black smoke. I looked it up and I’m pretty sure the air filter needs to be replaced—how much will a car air filter replacement cost?

Good question! The air filter is one of the cheaper parts to replace and an air filter replacement at an auto shop will usually cost somewhere between $40 and $80.
While there is variation depending on make and model, a standard air filter averages out to about $20 - $25 and labor costs can range anywhere from $20 to $40, depending on how long it takes. Most mechanics will be able to replace your engine air filter in under half an hour.
Of course, you could opt to replace the air filter yourself, which would cut down on roughly half the cost, but that is only recommended if you have ample experience working with your make and model vehicle.
Hope this helps!
