I’m starting a new job next month, so I’m putting together a monthly budget to keep my expenses on track. One of the costs I’m trying to predict is money spent on fuel—how much does the average person spend on gas in a month?

First of all, congratulations on the new job! To give you a ballpark estimate for your budget, the average American spends between $150 and $200 on gas each month.
However, your exact costs on fuel will depend on several factors—mainly, which state you live in, how much you drive, and the fuel-grade you use for your car.
- State: If you’re living in a state withlofty gas prices, like California, Hawaii, or Pennsylvania, you could easily shell out $200+ for gas. On the other hand, southern states like Texas or Oklahoma have more affordable fuel prices.
- How much you drive: The average American drives roughly 1,200 miles per month, or 40 miles each day. Naturally, your gas budget will depend on the distance of your daily commute.
- Fuel-grade: If you’re filling your car with premium fuel, you’ll likely have to pay 30 to 60 cents more per gallon.
Of course, you also have to consider rising gas prices. If gas prices rise, you can expect your monthly gas prices to increase in turn. According to a study by
