How much can I sell my car battery for?

How much is a used car battery worth? I’m getting a new car battery for my vehicle. The other one is working just fine, but I wanted to get a better one ahead of winter.

It’s great to hear that you’re going the extra mile to care for your car! This is a sure way to save money in the long run.
In terms of how much you can sell your car battery for, the going rate will vary, but you’ll likely get somewhere between $7 to $30.
Here are a few places you could try selling your battery:
  • Auto parts store: This is the best place to begin. As opposed to buying it from you, many stores will allow you to trade in old batteries for store credit. If you’re going to purchase a new battery anyway, this could be a great option. Many stores will offer you around $20 in credit.
  • Junkyards: If you’re looking to get cash for your battery, you can try going to a junkyard. There are about 21 pounds of lead in one car battery. Based on that figure, most junkyards will pay $7 for it.
  • Online: Craigslist and eBay may not sound like the most reliable places to sell your battery, but you’d be surprised how many people search online for affordable batteries—even if they’re used. You should first take the battery to a mechanic to assess its remaining lifespan. Set a fair price based on what you find out.
Keep in mind: Replacing your battery is a great idea to prep for winter driving. If you haven’t done so already, putting together a

is another smart way to protect your vehicle and yourself.
