How many spark plugs are in a Toyota Highlander?

I just got a Toyota Highlander with a four-cylinder engine and want to learn as much as I can about it. I’m hoping this will help me identify future problems and budget for repairs! Can you tell me how many spark plugs there are in my car?

We love that you’re proactively learning more about your car! The Toyota Highlander will need one spark plug for each cylinder in its engine, meaning your Highlander has four spark plugs.
Regular spark plugs can last anywhere from 30,000 miles up to 100,000 miles before they require replacing. Tell-tale signs that it’s time to get new spark plugs include:
  • Your car starts roughly
  • Your car idles roughly
  • Your engine is misfiring
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Poor or abnormal acceleration
Spark plugs that have gone bad will also look black, charred, wet and oily, or broken.
There are different types of spark plugs available on the market, such as copper, platinum, double platinum, and iridium. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for the type of spark plug that you’ll need.
While it can save you money to change your own spark plugs, we recommend going to a licensed mechanic for the repairs to avoid damaging your engine. Otherwise, it could cost you even more!
