How many miles can I drive before I have to change my brakes?

I’m pretty sure my brakes are going to be due for a replacement soon because I’ve had them for at least 30,000 miles. I’ve heard differing opinions on when I should change them, so I’m still unsure. How many miles can I drive before having to change my brakes?

You’re not alone in wondering how many miles
brakes last
because honestly, there isn’t a super straightforward answer here.
It is recommended that brakes are replaced sometime between 20,000 and 70,000 miles. Car owners tend to seek a brake replacement on average at around 40,000 miles which could mean that you’re approaching your own brake replacement time.
Other indicators that can tell you when your brakes are due for changing are:
  • Your vehicle’s indicator light for brakes comes on
  • Squealing when you press your brakes
  • Metallic grinding
    when you press your brakes
