How Long Does It Take For An Engine To Cool Down?

I’ve had to pull over because my engine was overheating. I tried to take a look at it, but it was seriously scalding hot. How long before it's cool enough for me to touch?

It usually takes about 30 minutes for an engine to cool down after overheating. Once it cools down, you can do a cursory examination of your coolant and oil to see if you can pinpoint the problem.
Overheating can be a sign of a variety of serious mechanical problems. Even if you can get your car running again, you should still have a mechanic look at your engine. But while there are quite a few problems that can lead to overheating, many of them can be prevented with proper maintenance.
