How long before you can retake the driving test?

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I failed my driver’s test. It was my first attempt. I want to try again, but how long do I have to wait before I can retake the driving test?

I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t pass your test—but not to worry! In most states, you can retake the driving test right away. Test takers typically must fail three times before they have to wait a significant amount of time between attempts.
Here are some examples of states that allow you to take your test the day after you fail the first time:
  • New York
  • Arkansas
  • Minnesota
  • Texas
However, if you fail the test three times, you may have to reapply for a permit or retake the written part of the driving test. States may also bar you from retaking the test for anywhere from a few weeks all the way up to a year to make sure you have enough time to practice and hone your skills.
Once you get your license, you’ll need to be
