How far should you look ahead while driving?

I want to become a more attentive and defensive driver. My mom said that one way to do so is to look further ahead while I’m driving. How far should I look ahead when I’m behind the wheel?

Scanning the road ahead while you’re driving is one of the best
safety tips
 you can employ when you’re behind the wheel! Generally speaking, you should look ahead 15 to 20 seconds or an eighth of a mile when driving in the city and 20 to 30 seconds or about a quarter of a mile on the highway.
When you’re looking ahead, pay careful attention to:
  • Oncoming motorists
  • Construction zones
  • Wildlife
  • Turning vehicles
  • Debris in the road
This gives you a better sense of what’s going on around you. You should also slow down if you notice that cars in front of you are slowing down or a car coming in the opposite direction is driving erratically.
