How do you replace the rear hatch handle on a Toyota Sequoia?

How can I replace the rear hatch handle on my Toyota Sequoia? I can’t open the back of my car. I was having trunk problems before, but with the broken handle it’s impossible to open. Is there a way to replace it at home?

While you can replace the rear hatch handle on your Toyota Sequoia at home, the process is pretty complicated. If you were already having issues with your trunk, it’s also possible that replacing the handle won’t solve your problem since there are several reasons that your door might not open.
If you do decide to try and replace your rear hatch handle on your
Toyota Sequoia
yourself, you’ll need to follow these steps:
  1. Get into the back of your car to access the door from the inside.
  2. Remove the cover over the pull tab on your door, then remove the small pin holding it in place.
  3. Using a screwdriver, pry off the covers over the screws holding the door handle in place.
  4. Using a 10mm socket wrench, remove the bolts underneath the covers.
  5. Once you’ve done that, remove the plastic interior door cover.
  6. At this point, you can reach inside the door and use your fingers to manually trigger the latch. If the latch doesn’t work, you’ll need to contact a mechanic to determine the source of the problem. If the latch works, the problem is your handle!
  7. Remove the eight 10mm bolts holding the metal panel behind the plastic in place.
  8. Remove the rubber plugs on the metal panel with your hands.
  9. Use a deep well socket to remove the bolts behind the rubber plugs.
  10. Use pliers to remove the five plastic clips behind the metal panel.
  11. Remove the nut on the key lock, which is on the left-hand side of most models.
  12. Now, exit your vehicle and lift the handle housing from your car. You should see a black cable that you’ll need to disconnect as well.
  13. Turn the housing around to access the handle.
  14. Remove the old handle and replace it with your new one.
  15. Follow these directions in reverse order to reassemble your rear door.
If you decide to visit a mechanic instead, expect to pay $100 to $350 to repair or replace the rear hatch handle.
