How do you put a Ford Fusion in Neutral when its battery is dead?
I’ve got a 2017 Ford Fusion and I left its lights on overnight so it won’t start for me today. My roommate’s car is parked outside to jumpstart it, but I need to move my Fusion out of the garage to do that. How do you put a Ford Fusion in Neutral when its battery is dead?

Hey, we’ve all been there! Fortunately, you can still put your Ford Fusion in Neutral even when the battery’s dead by using its shift lock release.
Here’s how you do it in a 2017 Fusion with the gear shift dial:
- Open up the center console compartment
- Look for a small slot on the front wall
- Insert a key or a screwdriver lightly into the slot—you’ll hear a click and the dial buttons will light up
- Keeping the key or screwdriver in the slot, press on your brake, and switch the dial to Neutral
Once you’re done moving your Fusion, you can shift back into Park like normal. It will get locked in Park again, though, so if you want to go back into Neutral, just repeat the steps to release the shift lock.
