How do you put a Ford Explorer in neutral with a dead battery?

My Ford Explorer isn’t starting, and the first tow company refused to tow it because we couldn’t figure out how to put it into neutral. I do not want to go through this with the next tow company. How do you shift a Ford Explorer into neutral when its battery is dead?

Nobody should have to deal with a negligent tow company on top of a dead car battery! Follow these steps to put a Ford Explorer in neutral with a dead battery:
  1. Open the cubby behind the gear shift at the bottom of the center stack of your Explorer’s console.
  2. Pull out the rubber lining. You may need a flashlight and your key for this next part.
  3. You should see a rectangular outline in the hard plastic frame beneath the rubber lining. Use your key to pop this rectangular cut-out off.
  4. Next you’re looking for a metal knob with some plastic rings on the plastic wall closest to the gear shift. Watch out for nearby wiring!
  5. Pull this knob out and hold it there to unlock the gear shift and put your Explorer into neutral.
Once you’ve completed these steps, your Ford Explorer can be pushed out of danger or towed without delay.
Towing and labor coverage
can also help smooth out the process! Also known as roadside assistance, this is a great add-on for your
car insurance
policy if you don’t have it already.
