How do you open the gas tank on a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle?

I’m borrowing a friend’s classic Beetle, and I want to fill it up before handing it back over. The only problem is, I can’t figure out how to open the gas tank in such an old car! How do you open the gas tank on a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle?

Opening the gas tank on a 1972
Volkswagen Beetle
can be accomplished in one of two ways:
  • Simply press and release on the right side of the fuel-filler door to open it—the pressure should release a latch, allowing the door to swing open and reveal the gas cap.
  • If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to pop the hood and locate the gas lid knob, which should be on the same side of the engine bay as your gas tank is in the car. Triggering the knob should release the latch and open your gas tank door.
