Running into problems with your vehicle is never fun and can be frustrating when you can’t quickly find answers! To manually put your BMW X5 in neutral with a dead battery, follow these steps:
  • Take the key fob and remove the key
  • Open the trunk
  • Locate and open the emergency kit located on the top of the trunk
  • Get the tow bar and gear release tool (orange)
  • Remove the plastic cover from the cupholder
  • Take the orange tool and stick it into the emergency gear release hole
  • Turn it to the right and push down to lock it in place
  • Your car should be in neutral
BMW doesn’t provide specific instructions for how to shift your car into neutral with a dead battery, so confirm with your owner’s manual or contact your local BMW dealership for help.
