How do you make DEF fluid?

I recently got a diesel truck and have been learning more about diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). I am curious about what exactly goes into the fluid to make it safe to use in vehicles. How is DEF made?

Great question! DEF is made from 32.5% pure urea and 67.5% purified water, and is an environmentally friendly substance!
Urea, otherwise termed carbamide, is a naturally occurring substance found in mammal urine. The substance binds to nitrogen, which allows DEF (or diesel exhaust fluid) to capture nitrogen compounds in diesel exhaust.
Urea is mixed with purified water to create DEF, which is carefully regulated by the American Petroleum Institute as a non-toxic substance with specific, chemical-purity requirements. As such, it is not recommended that consumers produce their own DEF.
Once your truck is filled with DEF and ready to go, ensure you’re protected on the road with the right
