How do you get a hardship license in NC?

A friend of mine lives in North Carolina and got her first DWI. She had her license revoked, and now her kids won’t have a way to get to school. Can she get a hardship license to start driving again?

DWIs can uproot your life. Let’s see if we can help your friend out.
You can get a hardship license in
North Carolina
to get limited driving privileges if you can prove that you genuinely need to drive for your livelihood or other obligations.
In North Carolina, you can apply for a hardship license through your local DMV. Here are the steps for obtaining a hardship license:
  • Complete substance abuse assessment
  • Pay $100 Civil Revocation Fee
  • Show proof of car insurance (complete Form DL-123)
  • Show documentation of employment or school schedule
  • Pay $100 court costs to receive the license
The timeline for receiving a hardship license can vary depending on the infraction. If someone’s license was suspended after a DWI arrest with a breathalyzer showing a BAC of 0.08 or higher, they could receive a hardship license after 10 days. But if the license was suspended for refusing a breathalyzer at the scene of a DWI, the person may need to wait six months before they can get a hardship license.
Your friend will probably see an increase in her insurance rate, but it’s important to keep her auto coverage since she needs it to apply for the hardship license. She can talk to her agent about her policy and to learn more about how the DWI might affect her rate.
