How do you gauge distance while driving?

I know I’m supposed to keep a certain amount of space between me and the person in front of me, but how am I supposed to gauge distance while I’m driving? Do I just make my best guess?

You can gauge the distance between you and the driver in front of you using timing. To measure the timing, find a stationary object on the side of the road. When the other driver’s rear bumper passes the object, count the seconds until your front bumper reaches the same point.
Typically, you should keep at least three seconds’ worth of space between your car and the person in front of you. Some will even recommend that you keep one second of space for
every 10 mph
 you are driving. If you’re behind a semi or another large vehicle, you should leave extra room.
