Foggy headlights can kind of creep up on you—drivers don’t often notice a problem until it is pretty bad. Luckily, cleaning your light covers isn’t complicated.
All you need is a mild abrasive (toothpaste, baking soda, or very fine sandpaper), a soft cloth, and some car wax to restore your headlights. Here’s what to do:
Clean your headlights with soap and water and let them dry
Apply the abrasive by rubbing a soft cloth in a circular motion with light strokes (otherwise, you can use very fine sandpaper—600-1500 grit)
Apply car wax to the headlights to protect from future buildup
Here’s a more detailed guide
. If your headlights aren’t too bad, toothpaste or baking soda (mixed with water or vinegar) should do a great job. But if there is a lot of buildup, you might want to use sandpaper.
Make sure you don’t rub too hard, as you don’t want to scratch the surface of your actual headlight. The result will be clear, bright headlights that make your car safer to drive.
