How do I use WD-40 to clean bugs off my car?
I was in Louisiana for a couple of weeks and now I’ve got insects splattered all over my car. I vaguely remember seeing something about how WD-40 can be used to clean, but I don’t remember the details—so how do I clean bugs off my car with WD-40?

Good question! WD-40 can be used for a lot of things and you can actually use it to clean bugs off your vehicle! Of course, bug remover products also exist, but WD-40 is pretty common and definitely cheaper—plus it works well.
Now, using WD-40 to clean bugs off your car isn’t a one-and-done thing but something to be integrated into your normal car washing process. Here’s how you do it:
- Fully wash your car with soap and water to remove any bugs that haven’t completely stuck to the paint or windshield yet.
- Apply WD-40 to the affected areas and let it sit for a few minutes, allowing the WD-40 to break down the bug remains
- Use a clean rag to wipe away the WD-40 and bug splatter. Repeat as necessary.
- Wash your car a second time to get rid of any remaining residue.
- Apply a coat of wax to help make cleaning bugs off easier in the future, as well as protect the paint. Bugs are usually composed of fairly acidic organic matter and their remains can actually corrode the paint if left on for a long time.
