How do I switch from 2h to 4h in a Jeep Wrangler?

My friends and I are going off-roading in my Jeep Wrangler this weekend, but I’ve never even had to use the 4WD in it. I don’t want to look stupid, so could you tell me how to switch from 2h to 4h?

If you’ve never had to engage 4WD, it makes sense you wouldn’t know how to do it. Luckily, switching from 2h to 4h in a
Jeep Wranglers
is really easy and you don’t even have to stop to do it—just make sure you’re not driving over 35 mph.
  • If your Jeep is automatic, you just shift the lever (or push the button in newer Jeeps) from 2HI to 4HI while maintaining your speed.
  • If your Wrangler is manual, everything is the same except you’ll need to take your foot off the gas and depress the clutch while you shift the lever into 4HI.
You may hear some noises or feel some bumps when you shift into 4WD, but this is perfectly normal. Note that if you get into any really gnarly territory and need to shift into 4LOW, you need to be moving at a crawl (we’re talking 2 or 3 mph) or, better yet, stopped before you shift the lever.
Jeeps are amazing off-road creatures, so you and your friends are sure to have an awesome time on your trip. To make sure you’re fully prepared, let the experts at
